Police Chiefs Defend ‘Respect’ After Trump Appears To Endorse Brutality

Law enforcement officials from around the world released a statement in apparent response to President Donald Trump’s speech Friday to cops in New York in which he appeared to encourage police brutality.

After his speech, the International Association of Police Chiefs published a blog post that detailed its use-of-force policies and training, highlighting the need for officers to “ensure that any use of force is carefully applied and objectively reasonable.”

The association explained that officers are trained to treat all individuals “with dignity and respect.”

“This is the bedrock principle behind the concepts of procedural justice and police legitimacy,” the IAPC wrote

‘Millennial Bill’ Could Help At-Risk Youth Secure Jobs

WASHINGTON — Taj Jackson dreamed of college after graduating from a Maryland high school in 2014, but didn’t think his family—headed by a single mother who worked multiple jobs—could afford it.

Then they both learned about a national nonprofit called `Year Up.’ It provides young adults in urban communities with skills training, work experience, educational opportunities and mentoring, aimed at helping them achieve professional careers within a year.

“We learned soft skills like email etiquette and mock job interviews,” said Jackson, who credited `Year Up’ with easing his shyness and instilling confidence. “I’ve developed leadership skills.”

Jackson completed the program in 2015 and is now gainfully employed in the IT industry. He’s enrolled in community college and expects to earn his Associate’s degree in Information Systems this December. He’s already planning to pursue a Bachelor’s degree at a state university.

NYPD: Husband, Wife Make Captain on Same Day

A husband and wife have become the first couple in NYPD history to become captains on the same day.

Alex Sarubbi-Barcia and Luis Barcia walked back to back onstage at a swearing-in ceremony at NYPD headquarters in Manhattan Friday, drawing loud cheers and applause.

The two met in 2002 as recruits in the police academy, NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill said at a ceremony marking the promotions of 100 members of the force.

"It seems they might have a lot to thank the police department for, actually," O'Neill joked.

Toxic Algae Spreads to More New York Lakes and Ponds; Nearly 50 This Week

By Glenn Colin

Syracuse, N.Y. -- The number of lakes and ponds with toxic algae blooms continues to grow in New York state.

The Department of Environmental Conservation reported today that 48 water bodies have suspected or confirmed or outbreaks of blue-green algae. A week ago, 39 lakes and ponds had the algae.

Sixteen lakes or ponds were new to the list this week. Some water bodies dropped off as the outbreaks dissipated, while others had new outbreaks.

The number of outbreaks will likely grow, as August and early September are peak times for the blooms. The algae produces toxins that can damage human livers and can also kill pets.

Assemblyman Michael Blake Responds to Trump's Long Island Speech

Bronx, NY - On Friday, in response to President Trump's speech on Long Island endorsing police brutality, New York State Assembly Member Michael Blake released the following statement:

"Today, in the latest sign of absolute disrespect and disregard for civility and humanity, President Trump endorsed police brutality, saying "please don't be too nice" when putting an arrested individual into a vehicle.

Let me be abundantly clear. I have absolute respect for the men and women who serve in law enforcement to provide safety and unity to our communities. Officers are often running into danger, and it's not to be taken lightly.

However, as a victim of police brutality myself, I know firsthand feeling defenseless, nervous, and being at a loss during those fleeting moments.  It is reprehensible that the President supports such behavior, yet again using divisive rhetoric such as "thugs" and "aliens" to describe human beings, and equally disgusting that officers on site applauded, laughed and cheered his comments. There is nothing funny or acceptable about not treating your fellow human being with decency and respect and following the rule of law, whether you were a uniform or a hoodie.  Brutality in any form is unacceptable, as is the divisive rhetoric and equally divisive actions from the President.

Moreover, many individuals who are victims of gang crimes, as the President was apparently intending to discuss at his event, do not seek out law enforcement for justice out of fear of possibly being detained or deported due to a discriminatory GOP agenda perpetuated by the Trump-Pence administration and congressional leadership that supports propaganda over people.

Rather than focus on his language alone, we will continue to seek ways to unite our community with law enforcement, such as next Tuesday's National Night Out events, and demonstrate that our vision is focused on providing #ABetterDeal for Americans with improved community and police relations that continue #BuildingABetterBronx."

The Anti-Lynching Protest Became Known as the
First Mass Demonstration By African-Americans

By Taryn Finley

Google commemorated the 100th anniversary of the anti-lynching Silent Parade with a doodle on its homepage Friday.

Though not as widely known as other marches, the Silent Parade was a significant precursor to the civil rights movement. In a demonstration organized by the NAACP, about 10,000 people gathered in New York City on July 28, 1917, to march in silence down Fifth Avenue to Madison Square.

Addabbo Supports Cuomo's 'Adopt-A-Station' Effort

Statement from Senator Joseph Addabbo, Jr.

"I fully support Gov. Cuomo's recent attempts to get more businesses to 'adopt-a-station' in an effort to change the way New York addresses matters with the MTA," Addabbo said. "I have supported the 'Adopt-A-Station' proposal previously. While it is highly unlikely this proposal will cure all the issues we encounter on our Subways, it is an alternative approach that could prove beneficial for our riders and possibly to any long-term transportation improvements."

IBEW Local 3 vs Spectrum: A Union Foreman Speaks Out

By Gary Glennell Toms

Marvin Billups, a construction foreman with IBEW Local 3, spoke at a Harlem Community Board 10 meeting several weeks ago and alleged that Charter Communications, Inc, was engaging in questionable business practices that could place Spectrum customers in jeopardy.

In addition, Billups claimed that Spectrum is hiring technicians from Texas and other states to replace those on strike, which is illegal, and claims to have irrefutable proof.

"If these things weren't bad enough, New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has a class-action suit pending against Spectrum for failing to provide high-speed service as advertised," said Billups.

On July 18, the National Action Network (NAN), in partnership with Spectrum, hosted a conversation about technology for economic mobility and social change. The two partnered on NAN’s Harlem Learning Lab, a free community source for students and seniors with courses in web design, graphic design, digital literacy and networking, among other digitally-focused programs.

According to NAN, technology has become a leading focus of its national platform and believes that ending the digital divide is a crucial part of the modern civil rights platform. Attendees included New York State Senator Brian Benjamin, Majora Carter, CEO of StartUp Box, and Camille Joseph, Charter Communications, Inc.

Billups and members of IBEW Local 3 also attended the meeting, which was held at NAN's national headquarters in Harlem. Billups voiced his concerns and questioned Charter Communications representative Camile Joseph about statistical data that was released by the company.

"We didn't show up with the intention of being disruptive, as some assumed. We just wanted to ask questions and have the community hear our side of the story. Period. I asked Ms. Joseph a question that she couldn't answer or was uncomfortable with, and that was clear to everyone in attendance," Billups said.

The strike has entered its fourth month, and the situation has reached critical mass for many walking the picket line. "City marshals recently evicted one of the strikers and his family, and another man, who's dealing with a serious medical issue, is on the verge of losing his medical coverage," said the foreman.

"We just want Spectrum and those involved in the negotiations to do the right thing. I've given 29 years of my life, and those on strike have devoted just as much time. Their reward? Some have been forced to go on food stamps just to feed their families. It's not right. All we want is to have this resolved as quickly as possible. We just want to go back to work."

On July 27, Mayor Bill de Blasio released the following statement via Twitter:

"This administration is concerned that Charter Communications may not be taking its franchise agreement with the city seriously. We have no choice but to conduct an audit to guarantee that Charter is in compliance, particularly with worker's rights provisions."

De Blasio Denies City Official Was Fired for Giving Info to Feds During Fund-Raising Investigation

By Greg B. Smith

Mayor de Blasio claims the firing of a top city official had “nothing to do” with the aide telling federal investigators City Hall improperly intervened on behalf of a big campaign donor.

But before Deputy Commissioner Ricardo Morales was fired, the city was well aware Morales had become a hostile witness whom federal prosecutors wanted to question about whether the mayor did favors for donors.

Morales was one of only two city workers questioned in the investigation who declined a city-funded lawyer. Instead, he chose to be represented by a lawyer paid for by the federal government.

Voters Blame Gov. Cuomo for City's Subway Troubles, Poll Finds

By Dan Rivoli

Gov. Cuomo has tried to spread around the responsibility for the subway’s plight, but voters are pinning their commuting woes on him.

A poll Quinnipiac University released Thursday found 40% of city voters who think the subway is “poor” and “not so good” mainly blame Cuomo. Meanwhile, more than a fifth mainly blame Mayor de Blasio.

The two feuding pols are locked in a battle over funding the city’s mass transit system — and 63% of voters think it’s hurting New York.

“These numbers are not good for Cuomo,” said Maurice Carroll, assistant director of the Quinnipiac poll. “He certainly wants to be president — he's certainly got it in his mind anyway. So stuff like this doesn't help. He's going to have to get the subways straightened out, because this is going to escalate.”

Jamaican Dad Missed Slain Daughter’s Funeral After Being Denied Entry Into U.S.

The Jamaican dad and half-sister of an 11-year-old girl who was allegedly killed by her neighbor were denied entry into the United States on Friday, three days before her funeral.

Kenroy Smith learned that his daughter AbbieGail had been stabbed to death after her mom reported her missing on July 13. Authorities found her body wrapped in a blanket on the roof of the mother’s apartment complex in Keansburg, New Jersey.

AbbieGail’s dad and half-sister, Kenish, began making arrangements to travel to the states for AbbieGail’s funeral Monday. Their plans came to a halt, however, when they were denied entry into the country.

Even after traveling over an hour from their hometown in Port Maria, Jamaica, to the U.S. Embassy in Kingston on Friday to show proof of the funeral, they still couldn’t get clearance, according to USA Today
