The New York Urban League to Host 31st HBCU Fair

New York, NY - The New York Urban League (NYUL) will host its 31st Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Fair on November 11 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30  p.m. The event is presented in partnership with the Malcolm Bernard HBCU College Fair Tour, Riverbank State Park and the New York Urban League Young Professionals.

High school and community college students will have face-to-face exposure to many of the most respected historically Black institutions of higher education throughout the country. High school seniors will have the opportunity to receive onsite admission, possible waived application fees, and scholarships. There will also be workshops and guest speakers with focus on helping students gain the knowledge and tools necessary for them to move to and through higher education.

All high school and community college students and their parents, community and faith-based youth groups, and college prep groups will not want to miss this annual college planning event and opportunity. There is no charge to attend the fair.  Students and youth groups must register online at http://www.nyul.org/hbcu. A list of participating HBCUs and additional college prep information is also on the website.

Last year over 3,200 attendees including, prospective college students and their families converged at the park to take part in NYUL HBCU Fair. This year’s fair will also include workshops for students, parents, teachers, counselors and anyone interested in higher education. The workshops are A Parent’s Guide to College: Preparation Checklist; College Admissions Test: A Preview of the NEXT SAT; Paying for College: Scholarships, Grants, Loans and FAFSA prep; Local Options: CUNY and SUNY.

The NYUL HBCU Fair is a highlight of the college access programming NYUL offer and a testament to the academic offerings of HBCUs. Studies show HBCUs award a high share of graduates with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) degrees and positively impact the nation’s economy. “HBCUs continue a proud tradition as vibrant centers of intellectual inquiry and engines of scientific discovery and innovation. New waves of students, faculty, and alumni are building on their rich legacies and applying to and attending HBCUs in higher numbers. We are proud to highlight the legacy and opportunity that HBCUs represent every year at this Fair,” NYUL President and CEO Arva R. Rice.

Through the sponsorship of UPS, Carver Federal Savings Bank and The Army in partnership with Riverbank State Park, the NYUL's Young Professionals, and the Malcolm Bernard HBCU College Fair the NYUL will bring opportunities to students who may not otherwise have access to these schools.
