GLOVERSVILLE – When a Fulton County newspaper ran a three-day series
on the presence of the Ku Klux Klan in the area, it became the most
widely read story its publisher can recall on its website.
It also drew wide criticism.
Gloversville Mayor Dayton King slammed the stories in the
Leader-Herald as inaccurate and undue publicity for a notorious hate
group.
"It has caused a stir in our city and our community," said the two-term mayor.
Reporter Mike Anich's stories in the Leader-Herald, which ran
Sunday through Tuesday, quoted self-identified Klan members who boasted
that 4,000 KKK members were active in the state and 200 in Fulton County
– and that local teachers, lawyers and doctors were "happily claiming
Klan membership."
