Gov. Cuomo to Call for Senate, Assembly Special Elections in May

ALBANY — Gov. Cuomo said Tuesday he’ll call a May 23 special election to fill the state Senate seat recently vacated when Bill Perkins won election to the City Council.

If the Dems win as expected, the party will again have 32 members in the Senate, enough for a majority — except for the fact that nine are aligned with the GOP.

The May 23 date is the closest by law that a special election can be held, Cuomo counsel Alfonso David said.

Whoever wins would take office after the April 1 budget deadline, but several weeks before the scheduled June 21 end of the legislation session, Cuomo said.
