The
following was submitted by Marc J. Cohen, President of the Student Assembly of
the State University of New York (SUNY SA).
“Celebrating Black History Month
is vital to continuing our progress as a country, state, and
University system. The tale of our history as a Student Assembly is tied to the
promise of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive education system for all. We
applaud the incredible efforts many brave people of color have made to take
this promise from a mere dream to our current reality.
“The framework for progress depends on
the creators of the frame itself, and the courage, love, and perseverance of
these trailblazers should not only be remembered, but reflected in every step
we make. From Booker T. Washington to Barack H. Obama, Black educators have
helped shape the way we think about our world and our roles in society, and
have enriched our lives with their wisdom and humanity. While we take
these four weeks each year to recognize these accomplished individuals, we
should continue to appreciate their contributions to society throughout the
year.”
