Faith Groups Across the Country Condemn Trump’s Ban on Refugees from Muslim Countries

By Jack Jenkins

A massive, diverse coalition of faith groups and clergy are condemning President Donald Trump this week, saying his forthcoming executive order barring entry to refugees and immigrants from certain Muslim-majority countries represents an assault on religious freedom.

Trump is expected to sign the order on Thursday, making good on a tweaked version of his promise to ban Muslims from entering the country. Although he initially proposed a “complete and total shut down” of all Muslim immigration, a draft of the order suspends any immigration for at least 30 days to anyone from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen—all Muslim-majority nations. It also reportedly bars all refugees for at least 120 days, and Syrian refugees “until further notice.”

Trump administration officials insisted the ban isn’t solely targeted at Islam, but Muslim Americans disagree. Leaders of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim civil rights group, held a press conference Wednesday afternoon to denounce the move.
