The New York Police Department plans to make public the outcome of a
disciplinary trial for the police officer who fatally shot Ramarley
Graham, an unarmed teenager, in the Bronx in 2012.
The decision marks something of a reversal for the de Blasio
administration, which had restricted access to police disciplinary
records last year, under a provision of state law known as 50-a.
Deputy Commissioner Kevin Richardson, of the NYPD’s Department
Advocate’s Office, disclosed the change on Wednesday morning, when he
was asked by a reporter if the city would notify Graham's family of the
resolution in the case.
"When there is a decision in the Richard Haste case, that they will
be informed," Richardson said. "And because the decision is such an
important one, we are working within the confines of 50-a to make sure
that there is a public awareness of what that resolution is as well."
