Senator Reverend Ruben Diaz's Open Letter to Commissioner O’Neill

November 1, 2016

Commissioner James O’Neill
New York City Police Department
One Police Plaza 14th Floor
New York, NY 10007

Dear Commissioner O’Neill:

As a New York State Senator and as the President of the New York Hispanic Clergy Organization, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to you, to Chief of Department Carlos Gomez, to Captain Kevin Taylor, and to all of the Members of the New York City Police Department who assisted with the Funeral and Burial Services for Police Chaplain Luis Serrano.

Your presence and words of comfort will never be forgotten. This public display of respect and honor for our beloved Police Chaplain Luis Serrano’s life will resonate in my hearts and in the hearts of his family members, his congregation, fellow clergy, elected officials, Members of the New York City Police Department and the community at large.

Captain Kevin Taylor’s oversight ensured that this farewell was done with the utmost respect for Police Chaplain Luis Serrano, who humbly served the spiritual needs of so many police officers. Everything from the Mounted Police Officers to the street and highway assistance for the funeral cortege procession to the cemetery demonstrated a great reverence for Police Chaplain Luis Serrano’s life.

The Hispanic religious community and our community in general are deeply grateful for and honored by Captain Kevin Taylor’s service and dedication to the Police Chaplain Luis Serrano and his family during the entire time of his hospitalization, and during the time of his death, wake funeral and burial.

Captain Kevin Taylor’s presence and support for Chaplain Luis Serrano and his family is an example of how and why the New York City Police Department is called New York’s Finest.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart, and want you to know that you will all remain in my prayers.

Respectfully,

Senator Reverend Ruben Diaz
