In Memoriam: Stanford Lipsey, Publisher of 'The Buffalo News'

Statement from Governor Andrew Cuomo

"I am profoundly saddened by the passing of Stanford Lipsey, the longtime publisher of The Buffalo News. Stan was a dedicated leader of The News, guiding its growth into a thriving, high caliber newspaper, but even more so, he was an incomparable advocate for the resurgence of Buffalo and the region as a whole. Where others saw a city without a future, Stan saw limitless opportunity.

"Stan loved Buffalo and he believed in Buffalo. He saw a city that could not only be a center of economic activity in New York, but that could be a testament to the enduring spirit of Western New York for the world to see. He was incredibly generous and a leading philanthropist in Buffalo, supporting arts, architecture, conservancy and education initiatives, among countless charities and organizations. Stan was a Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist and a newspaperman at heart who would often say, 'Our job is afflict the comfortable.' He took that mantra to heart and used The News to tell the story of Buffalo, the good and the bad.

"Today, we lost a great New Yorker, but as we mourn his loss, we can find comfort that he was able to see his dream for Buffalo in action. There was no better friend to Buffalo than Stan Lipsey, and for that, we will always be grateful. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this time. In his honor, we remain dedicated to our investments in a bright future for Western New York and to making his dream of a better Buffalo into a reality of the best Buffalo."
