Dr. Jere Hochman Appointed Deputy Secretary for Education

 

Governor Andrew Cuomo today announced the appointment of Dr. Jere Hochman as the Administration's new Deputy Secretary for Education.

“Dr. Hochman brings tremendous experience and an in-depth knowledge of the public education system to his new role,” said Governor Cuomo. “He has spent his career working to strengthen learning environments and make schools a better place for all, and he will be a valuable member of our policy team. I look forward to working with Dr. Hochman to ensure that all students in our state receive the best education possible.”

"It is an honor to join Governor Cuomo's administration-- a team of impressive individuals that work on the issues affecting the people of this state every single day," Dr. Hochman said. "This Governor has spearheaded many important education initiatives to improve New York's public schools systems acting as the students' biggest advocate. I am excited to build on these initiatives and work to improve the quality of education for every child in New York."

Dr. Hochman brings with him 40 years of public education experience in suburban, regional, and rural school districts and working collaboratively with urban schools. Prior to this role, he served as a Superintendent of Schools for 20 years: in Bedford Central School District in Westchester County, in Amherst, Massachusetts, and in the 22,000 student Parkway School District in St. Louis, Missouri.

He began his career as an English teacher, going on to become school principal and assistant superintendent. In recent years, he served on the Regents Task Force for APPR and participated in the U.S. Department of Education Collaboration Conference with superintendents, Board Presidents, and Union Presidents from districts across the country. Dr. Hochman is an active member of several professional educational associations which include the New York State Council of School Superintendents, the Lower Hudson Council of School Superintendents, American Association of School Administrators, and previously the Minority Student Achievement Network. He currently teaches courses for Manhattanville College and Bank Street College (Future School Leaders Academy).

Dr. Hochman holds a B.A. in English, an M.Ed. in Curriculum and School Administration and an Ed.D from Teachers’ College, Columbia University.
