Addabbo: 'Don't Let Falls Trip You Up!'

Senator, Visiting Nurse Service of NY to Host Special Seminar for Queens Seniors

On May 22, New York State Senator Joseph Addabbo, Jr. (D-Queens) and the Visiting Nurse Service of NY (VNSNY) will present “Preventing Falls Among Seniors – Tips & Techniques for Keeping Elder New Yorkers Strong on Their Feet”.

Queens has one of the largest senior populations of the five boroughs, and with today’s aging “boomer” population, coupled with increased longevity, the number continues to grow. Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries in adults over 65.

The free 60-minute seminar is customized to address any key issues that resonate specifically with seniors and families in Queens.

“Trips and falls are a serious concern among our senior community members,” said Addabbo.

“We are very glad that experts from the Visiting Nurse Service of New York have made themselves available to help our residents better understand their risks for falling, and learn what they can do to make their homes safer and prevent falls in their daily routines.”

Led by nationally recognized expert Eileen Bach, DPT, VNSNY’s Director of Rehabilitation Quality Assurance and Education Services, the workshop aims to empower seniors and their family caregivers with knowledge that will keep them safe and confident in their home and community environments.

“Research tells us that 1 in 3 adults over the age of 65 will suffer a serious fall this year, and 70% of those falls will occur in the home,” says Dr. Bach.

“What’s more, the CDC estimates that every hour there are two deaths and more than 250 emergency room visits for falls-related injuries among older people. Senator Addabbo’s concern for his constituents is well placed—we’re looking forward to sharing our tips and techniques with those who attend the workshop.”

The event will take place from 10:15 to 11:30 am, and free lunches and gift bags will be provided.

The host site will be the Howard Beach Senior Center, 156-45 84th Street, Howard Beach, New York. Those planning to attend are advised to enter on 85th Street between 156th and 157th Avenues.
